William Duvall King Jr., of Raleigh, NC

October 30, 1939 - February 16, 2024

William Duvall King Jr., age 84, of Raleigh, North Carolina, passed away on February 16, 2024. 

Following his graduation from Needham Broughton High School in 1957, Duvall attended Campbell College for one year and then was accepted into the first US Naval Nuclear Polaris Submarine School. After serving on active duty in the Submarine Corps for over 3 years, he remained in the US Naval Reserves and then went on to graduate from Campbell. 

Duvall loved jazz, easy listening, and R&B. He was the first budget officer of the newly formed NC Department of Commerce and then worked with the NC Banking Commission, until his retirement.

He loved to go camping by Crabtree Creek with his cousins and his son, Jonathan. He taught his children financial responsibility and independence, and he had a contagious laugh and sense of humor with his family. His Christian faith was important to him throughout his life. 

Duvall loved taking the sunfish sailing at Morehead City during family vacations and spending time with the family dogs, Noodles, Ike, Blue, and Smudge. He also enjoyed cooking southern cuisine and spending time with family and friends eating good food, as well as being an avid gardener. 

He was predeceased by his parents, Lorene Coley King and W.D. King, Sr; his sister, Rebecca Morris (Charles); and his brother, Marvin King. 

He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Diana Hooks King; daughter, Sheffield King Kropp; son, Jonathan Duvall King; sister, Ellen King Byrum (Dan); grandchildren, McKenna and Anna Giles; and various nieces and nephews.
