Dr. Thomas Whetsell Wingfield, 83, passed away peacefully on January 23, 2022 at Levine Dickson Hospice House in Charlotte, North Carolina. He was born January 10, 1939 at Mercy Hospital in Mecklenburg County, son of the late Thomas Darwin and Helen Whetsell Wingfield.

He is survived by his loving wife of 56 years Mary-Bogue Mahony Wingfield; children Thomas Whetsell Wingfield, Jr. of Charlotte, NC, Michael Darwin Wingfield, D.O. and wife Jennifer J. Wingfield of Pawley's Island, SC, Alexander Cummings Wingfield of Los Angeles, CA, Marybogue Chenoweth Wingfield, J.D. and husband Ravi Best of Maplewood, NJ, Winston Price Wingfield and wife Jessa Sherman Wingfield of Los Angeles, CA; grandchildren Marilyn Jensen Wingfield, Sophia Lynne Wingfield, Liza Thomas Wingfield, Bryce and George Wingfield, Alexander Duke Wingfield, Frankie Mahony Wingfield, Gehrig Thomas Cornagie and Mattingly Bogue Cornagie.

Services will be held at the convenience of the family. Dr. Wingfield graduated from the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill in 1961 with a pre-medicine degree. While at Chapel Hill, he was a member of the Phi Delta Theta fraternity. Dr. Wingfield continued his education at the University of Maryland Medical School-College Park, where he earned his Doctor of Medicine degree. Dr. Wingfield completed his anesthesia residency in Chapel Hill, North Carolina. Dr. Wingfield proudly served as a Navy doctor in the U.S. Marine Corps at Camp Pendleton Naval Hospital in Oceanside, California.

After practicing anesthesia in various states, a young Dr. Wingfield was offered to establish and chair the anesthesia group at Gaston Memorial Hospital. Dr. Wingfield accepted this offer and created Gaston Anesthesia Associates in 1978. Under his 25-year tenure, Dr. Wingfield cultivated an anesthesia group known for exceptional anesthesia care to all patients and fostered a remarkably supportive working environment for his colleagues. Gaston Anesthesia Associates was very much a family, and Dr. Wingfield loved and supported his work family with the same generosity and loyalty he showed his biological family.

When Dr. Wingfield was not at Gaston Memorial Hospital, he could be found on the golf range at the Gaston Country Club with the biggest bucket of golf balls ever seen, and then also on the course in competitive matches where he and his fellow golf addicts shared strategic practical jokes and witty banter.

Dr. Wingfield was an avid traveler, and enjoyed trips to San Francisco, Ireland, Disney-world, The Homestead in Virginia, The Greenbriar in West Virgina, Pinehurst, and most memorable for his family, New York City. Dr. Wingfield adored the Carlyle Hotel in New York City and spent many evenings at the Café Carlyle absorbing the musical talents of cabaret virtuoso Bobby Short. Dr. Wingfield would always find his way to the iconic Gallagher’s Steakhouse in the theatre district for a perfect steak and Bombay Sapphire & Tonic.

To those who met him, Dr. Wingfield was not easily forgotten. To those who love him, he will be remembered in many ways, a brilliant anesthesiologist, a diligent professional, a human encyclopedia, a quick witted and hilarious friend, a voracious reader, an incredibly generous soul, “Dadda,” “Wing,” “the Doc,” and so much more. Whenever anything came to an end during his life, Dr. Wingfield would optimistically provide, “Well, we had a good run!” Dr. Wingfield undoubtedly had a very, very, very good run.
