George Edward Barkley

George Edward Barkley of Raleigh, North Carolina
February 15, 1939 - November 11, 2024

George Edward Barkley died on November 11, 2024, in Greensboro, NC. He was born on February 15,1939, in Greensboro. His family moved to Raleigh where his father was a Professor of Psychology at NC State University. He remained in Raleigh after his marriage to Rose Moore in 1962, raising his family made up of two daughters on Mars Street in the neighborhood of Starmount.

He worked his entire career at Hudson Belk as Assistant Credit Manager, retiring in 2003 after a 39-year career. He never knew a stranger and people would often seek him out to say hello at many Raleigh restaurants from his time at Hudson Belk.

He is survived in death by his two daughters, Beth Barkley Balas (Mark) of Middlesex, NC, and Jean Barkley Workman Elms (James) of Greensboro. In addition, his three grandchildren who adored their Pops/Poppy, Alex Jarrell of Middlesex and Garrett and Whitaker Rose Workman both of Greensboro. He is also survived by one remaining brother, Allan (Barbara) who lovingly managed his investment portfolio post-retirement.

He is preceded in death by his beloved Rose who passed away unexpectedly in 2001. Their 39-year marriage is a testament to patience and love. He is also preceded in death by his parents Dr. Key Lee Barkley and Helen Mae Roberts Barkley, two of his brothers John and Karl Barkley, and a sister Jean who died at the age of 5.

George was a long-time member of St. Mark’s Episcopal Church in Raleigh. It was his absolute joy to volunteer folding bulletins every Thursday after retirement in 2003 and attending Sunday services. St. Marks provided lifelong friendships that immensely supported him through his wife’s death in 2001.

Prior to COVID, Dad was an active senior enjoying his exercise group at Wake Medical Center (and their breakfasts after exercise), his Starmount breakfasts with neighbors, and his weekly dinners at K&W Cafeteria. His true loves in life were his wife, Rose, his three grandchildren, a good cup of coffee, reading the newspaper, listening to bluegrass and country music, and a perfect ribeye steak and hot dog all the way. He always enjoyed a good meal.

After breaking his hip in 2022, dad moved to assisted living in Greensboro. While he never wanted to leave his home and Starmount friends, he quickly developed a circle of friends at Vera Springs Assisted Living facility. The family is incredibly grateful for the support from the Vera Springs staff and residents. In addition, the family is also grateful to the Whitestone Care and Wellness staff who cared for him in his final four months of life. Lastly, the nurses, CNAs, Social Workers, and Chaplain of The Authoracare Collective of Greensboro were all so loving and caring for dad for the past year of his life.
