Obituary for Jane Cochran (Spalding) of Anchorage, Alaska 
February 4, 1940 - October 4, 2015 

Longtime resident of Anchorage, Jane Cochran Spalding, 75, passed away peacefully on Sunday, October 4, 2015, at Providence Hospital in Anchorage, Alaska from complications caused from injuries as a result of being involved in an automobile accident. 

She was born February 4, 1940 in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. Jane graduated from The University of North Carolina Greensboro in 1959 with a BS in Home Economics. She became a resident of Alaska in 1966. After arriving here she worked for a kitchen design company until Sears Roebuck opened in Anchorage; where she put her knowledge to work as an Advertising Manager for approximately 5 years. She then entered the Real Estate industry where she worked as a Real Estate Agent through the boom years of the pipeline through until early 1990.
 
She was a lifetime member of the German Shepherd Club of Alaska. She spent her life devoted to training, teaching, and showing German Shepherds. She traveled the State of Alaska to show her German Shepherds, as well as the lower 48 states and Canada. As an owner of many through the years she also was a teacher of the German Shepherd Club of Alaska Puppy Classes along with the K-9 Good Citizen & Temperament Testing classes. She was and advocate and long standing member of the Dollar for Dog program in Anchorage Alaska.  

Jane wrote a column for the Anchorage Times giving advice and opinions on other topics regarding pet ownership. Her love for her German Shepherds and writing led her to become a cartoonist for the German Shepherd Club Newsletter where she created the cartoon known as "Ruthie' which ran for many years. Her creative style and quick witted humor led to many nominations, and the eventual winning of the National Champion Dog Writers Association of America for the best newsletter of the year.

Besides the four legged animals Jane advocated for and loved, she loved to cook and enjoyed reading as a pastime.  Jane also enjoyed her excursions and travels visiting in Porto Rico, Mexico, New Zealand and Australia visiting fellow Rotarians with her husband.

Jane is survived by her husband of 48 years; John W. Spalding, two nephews and several cousins.
