Leland Thomas Jones, 70 years of age, passed away on June 11th, after a long and courageous battle with lymphoma. Tom was born in Smithfield, NC on January 8, 1939, the son of Leland E. and Iola B. Jones, and moved to Raleigh when he was six weeks old.

Tom was a graduate of Broughton High School and attended both Wake Technical College and UNC Institute of Government. He was a graduate of the first Raleigh Police Academy and in his early years, worked as a Raleigh Police Officer for a brief period before taking a position in State Government. Tom was very active in Oak Island politics attending Town Council meetings, writing letters to the editor of the State Port Pilot newspaper, and generally trying to keep our elected officials "on their toes". During the last local election, he was moderator for a "Meet The Candidates" event sponsored by the Oak Island Senior Center and open to the residents of Oak Island.

Tom was also the sound technician for the "Oak Island Boys" a group of men retired from various professions; some who played professionally in their younger years.

You will find the "Oak Island Boys" every other Friday night at the Oak Island Recreation Center entertaining the visitors and residents of Oak Island with "good old country music".
