Obituary for L.G. “Steve” Stephenson of Raleigh, NC
July 11, 1945 - January 25, 2020

L.G. “Steve” Stephenson, of Raleigh, born July 11th, 1945, died peacefully in his sleep January 25th, 2020, at the age of 74. He was a retired industrial engineer with Westinghouse and ABB, a graduate of Broughton High School and NCSU, and a proud member of the Ole Raleigh Boys.

But his real passion was as an athletics official, where he was a mentor and guide to generations of young athletes for 42 years. His walls were covered with awards, plaques, and recognitions from the NCHSAA, but he was more interested in the people he met. If you played basketball, football, baseball, or volleyball in or around the Triangle area, he called your games and remembered you by name and by number.

He never met a stranger and would go out of his way to speak to anyone he even remotely recognized. He was a devoted member of the Mid-Way Baptist Church choir, where he also put his carpentry skills to work in service to his community and to his Lord and Savior. He was a loving father who never missed an athletic event or performance of his children or his grandchildren. His presence will be sorely missed.

Steve is survived by: sisters Susan Crotts and Sally Whorley; children Haley Vonnoh and Brad Stephenson and their mother Ginger Stephenson; grandchildren Tripp Vonnoh, Reese Vonnoh, Jeffrey Stephenson, and Emmett Stephenson; and dear friend Linda Hawkins.
