Carol Barneycastle (Wood)

Obituary for Carol Barneycastle (Wood) of Florence, SC
November 27, 1938 - June 06, 2018

Carol Barneycastle Wood, 79, died peacefully at home Wednesday, June 6, 2018, after an extended battle with cancer.

Carol was born in Rocky Mount, North Carolina, a daughter of the late Paul and Ruby Young Barneycastle.  She graduated from Needham B. Broughton High School in Raleigh, NC, in 1957, and subsequently from Peace College, also in Raleigh, in 1959. During her time as a student at Peace College, she served as President of Phi Theta Mu and President of Theta Kappa Honor Society. She was chosen Sigma Chi Sweetheart in 1961 at North Carolina State University while her future husband, Jim Wood, was president of that chapter.

Shortly after graduation the two married and Carol went to work in banking until becoming a stay-at-home mother, a job at which she excelled, supporting her children in all their extra-curricular activities and adventures. She was an excellent and a generous cook, delighting friends and neighbors with delicious gifts from her kitchen long after she was no longer strong enough to cook. She always found a way.

In 1982, upon the founding of J. M. Wood Johnstone Supply Company, she supported her husband by going to work in the office until retiring from that position in 2006.

She was a long-time member of St. John’s Church in Florence and an avid supporter of the House of Hope, the Florence Little Theater, and the Florence Ballet Company for which she enjoyed many years of designing and sewing costumes. She also enjoyed friendship and dancing as a member of the Florentine Debutante Club.

Survivors include her husband, James McConnell Wood; two daughters, Angela McConnell Woodberry and her husband, Robert (Archie), of Florence, and Shannon Wood Newton and her husband, Peter, of Tetbury, United Kingdom; a brother, Cary Barneycastle of Raleigh, NC; four grandchildren, Robert Kyle Woodberry of Columbia, SC, Kenneth James Woodberry and Blair McConnell Woodberry, both of Florence, and Jamie Peter Newton of Tetbury, UK.

Carol's husband, Jim Wood, was the president of the Sigma Chi fraternity at NC State, while I was also a Sigma Chi at NC State. In the Spring of 1960, Jim and I hitch-hiked to Florada for Spring break. On the way back, we stopped in Winter Park, Florida - Jim's home town. While we were touring Winter Park, Jim pointed out Rollings College. I perked up and remembered that Betty Jane Van Mater,  the daughter of my mothers best friend, went to Rolling College. So, we stopped by her sororoty house to say hello. A year and a half later, Betty Jane and I were married.

Hey Bill, were you related to Betty Jane or did your father work at the NC State dairy farm, or what? Betty Jane and i had three children, who all now live in California. My two daughters live next to each other in Berkeley, CA and Betty Jane lives right across the street from them. So, I see Betty Jane frequently even though we got divorced in 1975. I have now been married to Julie Conger since 1995. From 1975 to 1995, I was a bachelor.
