Obituary for Joseph Dillon Kalkhurst of Raleigh, NC
September 1, 1939 – March 20, 2013

Joseph Dillon Kalkhurst,73, of Raleigh, N.C. passed away at UNC Memorial Hospital in Chapel Hill on March 20, 2013 following complications from cardiac surgery. 

Born in Raleigh, N.C., Joe graduated in 1957 from Needham Broughton High School where he was an All-American swimmer. Recently, in recognizing his accomplishments as a swimmer, he was inducted into the Broughton Hall of Fame. He received his college education at UNC Chapel Hill where he was a member of Phi Gamma Delta fraternity, the Gorgons Head Lodge and the Men's Swimming Team. He served in the US Marine Corps, trained at Parris Island and later became a member of the USMC Reserve Unit in Raleigh. 

His rewarding and successful real estate career began when he joined Williams and Haywood. He later co-founded Dillon and Company which became a successful residential firm. As time went by, Joe's interests turned to commercial real estate ventures. To pursue those interests he first formed Capital City Management Company, then later joined York Properties, starting up and overseeing the commercial division as well as continuing with his own brokerage activities. His specialty was tax-deferred exchanges and sale/leaseback transactions. Joe served as president of the Raleigh-Wake County Board of Realtors and was a former Realtor of the Year. He was also a president of the Carolinas Chapter of the Society of Industrial and Office Realtors (SIOR). 

As an alumnus of Needham Broughton High School he was a supporter of the Broughton Capital Foundation and had served as a member of its board. Joe always had enthusiasm for helping ambitious newcomers into the business and is well known as a patient and trustworthy mentor. Many consider him to be a pioneer in the world of modern day residential and commercial brokerage in the Triangle area. Over the years he mentored a huge number of top brokers and managers, many of whom have gone on to start their own brokerage firms. His common sense and straightforward way of consensus building and problem solving endeared him to a multitude of realtors who practice residential and commercial brokerage in the area today. 

A man of many talents, Joe enjoyed cooking, playing the piano, boating, fishing, and at one time piloting his small Cessna plane. He was a lifelong swimmer and had many friends at the YMCA and Carolina Country Club. He especially enjoyed the camaraderie at the 19th Hole where he often ate lunch after workouts. Joe and his wife Madelyn owned a second home in Swansboro, N.C. and enjoyed being a part of the community there. In later years they also grew fond of the gulf coast of Florida where Joe's enthusiasm for the outdoors could be nurtured year round. 

His zest for life and his rich sense of humor and fun-loving nature made him well loved. Additionally, his integrity, management style and business acumen were admired and respected wherever he went. Joe will be remembered as a loving father and husband and those who knew him best know that he cherished the time spent with his family. 

He is survived by his wife Madelyn Langdon Kalkhurst, his children Dillon Knight Kalkhurst and wife Linda of Orlando, Fla., Kirsten Kalkhurst Burbo and husband Doug of Boston MA, and Benjamin Whiteley Baker Jr. and wife Erin of Raleigh; six grandchildren Joseph Jordan Kalkhurst, Emily Jane Burbo, Sarah Elizabeth Burbo, Ashby Tucker Baker, Benjamin Whiteley Baker III and Lily MacRae Baker. He is also survived by his sister Mae Elizabeth Kalkhurst and husband Robert Whitaker of Cary, his nephew David Dillon Jessee and wife Karen of Carrboro, and his aunt Elizabeth Woolford Trapp of Durham.
