Obituary for Richard Foster Jones of Hilton Head Island, SC
January 4, 1939 - September 3, 2012

Richard Foster Jones, 73, of Hilton Head Island, SC, passed away on Monday, September 3 at his home, surrounded by his loving family. Mr. Jones was born in Wilmington, NC on January 4, 1939, He was the son of Helen Foster Jones Blake and George Edward (Buck) Jones, both of whom predeceased him. He graduated from Needham Broughton High School in Raleigh, NC, and was a 1962 graduate of North Carolina State University. He received his Masters in Business Administration from the University of North Carolina. 

He retired from Ingersoll-Rand Co. in 1984, having begun his career as an applications engineer in Richmond, VA. He held subsequent positions in sales, engineering, and sales management in Wilmington, DE and Philadelphia, PA; marketing management in Allentown, PA; and as Vice-president of Distributor Sales for the Pump Group at I-R's corporate headquarters in Woodcliff Lake, NJ. The family moved to Hastings, NE in 1981, where Mr. Jones served as President of Western Land Roller Co., a wholly-owned subsidiary of I-R. There, he was also Vice-President and General Manager of the Pump Group's Vertical Turbine Pump Division at that time. The family moved to Hilton Head in 1985. On Hilton Head, he and his wife owned and operated Wagner-Jones, Ltd., an art appraisal and consultation firm, between 1995 and 2003. 

He was a man of many passions---ACC basketball, Indianapolis 500 races, which he attended for over 2 decades, and an avid sailor, often crewing on Chesapeake Bay races during the 1970s and early 1980s. On Hilton Head, he honed his golfing skills with gusto. He was a member of the Sea Pines Country Club, and a longtime volunteer trolley driver at Hilton Head Hospital. 

Mr. Jones is survived by his wife of 47 years, Mary Ella Wagner Jones; son and daughter-in-law Richard Christopher Jones and Shauna Ter Hark, of Charleston, SC; daughter and son-in-law Linley and Scott Frieden, of Bluffton, SC ; and a daughter and son-in-law, Ashley and Andy Folz, of Evansville, IN. Six marvelous grandchildren---Emma Leighton Frieden, Andrew Foster Folz, Benjamin Steven Folz, Samuel Wagner Jones, Reese MacKenzie Frieden, and Brody Walker Frieden brought him love and laughter and so much joy. Also surviving are a brother and sister-in-law, George Edward Jones, Jr. and Carol, of Raleigh, NC; and a sister and brother-in-law Carol and Winfried Pope of Greensboro, NC, as well as several nieces and nephews, and a legion of loving, caring friends.
